Whether it concerns an I/O board or a complete system, the single steps towards the final product always follow predetermined rules. These rules and guidelines are part of an implemented quality system (ISO 9001 with AS9100 in progress).
Design quality is already a deciding factor for the reliability of the product in operation. Therefore all projects/designs are developed according to the V-model.
A requirements specification is composed, from which progressively more detailled documents are created, starting at the architecture/system level and down to component level specifications. When the requirements have been expanded to a level suitable for unambiguous implementation, the system is implemented and subsequently verified and validated using the requirements set forth earlier.
During the design process the reliability of the product has to be defined under given environmental stress over a desired period of time, such as by failure of the device under certain conditions.
Also safety management tools including requirement tracing are used. Obsolescence management is used when agreed with the customer.
Apart from the design process itself, risk management, which deals with identification, analysis, prioritization and solution of all possible risks in technical, financial or personnel related respects, is used by default for all processes and procedures.
Depending on the requirements of the application, the design process may have to comply to specific standards like IEC61508 (industrial and railways) or DO-178B and DO-254 (aerospace) to support customer certification and authority approval. In these cases additional design assurance methods must be applied, specific environmental tests according EN-50155 (railways) or DO-160 (aerospace) using timing analysis and functional failure path analysis.
